We’ll have a friend like this beautiful Cleveland Bay we met up in Vermont a month or so ago.
We’ll be able to see him when we look out from our porch, watching the sun go down –
or when he hangs his (huge!) head over the half-door that leads to our kitchen – just like Paul Revere had in his house.
In fact, legend has it that “Brown Beauty” (that was his borrowed mare’s name) used to get her own bowl of porridge in the mornings when he kept her for his friend Larkin.
All I know is, if we’re lucky enough to have a child in our life at some point…they’ll be raised on horseback.
And they’ll share their porridge with our own “Brown Beauty” on cold winter mornings.

John and I are back in Qatar for the better part of 2 months. During that time, my mom is staying in our place and managing several home improvement projects (God Bless Her!)……including landscaping!
…including new sod!
…including a new Magnolia tree! Yay!
I know, I know.
Right now, it’s just a plan on a page. But the thought of seeing the real thing when we get home for a short time in December is getting me through this latest deployment…

My wonderful and inspiring friend Cris (a rancher’s daughter…LOVE IT!) sent me a cool survey…I did one last Christmas from Pam and thought…Why Not? Let’s do another one! So respond either with your answers in a link to YOUR blog or in the comments section!
Cris’ answers are first…mine are in turquoise and are the second responses…
1. What time did you get up this morning? 6am Oh, Dear Lord. I had to take John to the airport in Burlington, VT, so 3 am. Ridiculous.
2. Diamonds or pearls? love both Diamonds, Baby. Definitely.
3. What was the last film you saw at the cinema? some kid flick IM sure…lol John & I went to see the latest Indiana Jones movieafter 10 months of being deployed…and I loved eating the fatty, salty popcorn as much as I liked the experience of the big screen.
4. What is your favorite TV show? antique road show I think I like “Clean House” right now…I love that Niecy Nash gal. Hilarious.
5. What do you usually have for breakfast? coffee and cookies Coffee and a banana. Sometimes a Danactive, if I remember.
6. What is your middle name? Kathleen Craig
7. What food do you dislike? liver and onions, beets and collard greens Anything braised…except I DO like Armour’s Osso Bucco. It’s incredible.
8 . What is your favorite CD at the moment? Norah Jones Audio Book: “A Room With a View”
9. What kind of car do you drive? Oldsmobile Intrigue…but I am SOoOOO missing my sexy truck My 1990 Ford F-150. It’s the one I’ve had since I was 20. It’s so funny: All my little troopies at work are like: “Ma’am!!! Where’d you get your truck???? It’s so cool!” And the reason that it’s cool is because it’s almost 20 years old.
Which means I’m 20 years older.

10. Favorite sandwich? turkey, pepperjack, lettuce and tomato on whole grain bread Toss up: either grilled cheese with tomato and red onion on thinly-sliced French bread…or baloney (who spells it bologna, anyway???) with lettuce and mayo on white bread.
11. What characteristic do you despise? people that think they are better than others People who talk too much.
12. Favorite item of clothing? cozy socks and slippers…did I mention my sexy thong…just kiddin My faded, old blue jeans.
13. If you could go anywhere in the world on vacation, where would you go? Greece to check out my ancestors..OR… any warm and remote beach!!!! The Trans-Russian train that goes from West to East…ending in the Kamchatka Peninsula.
14. Are you an organized person? nope…totally random abstract With work, Ja. With home, Nein.
15. Where would you retire to? some place warm and tropical with a beach…I could totally be a beach bum or harley babe Somewhere with mountains, rain, and pine trees. I’m thinking the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State. John’s thinking West By-God-Virginia. We’ll see.
16. What was one of your most memorable birthdays? cant really think one…I suck This one coming up…I’ll be 39. Wow.
17. What are you going to do when you finish this? jump in the pool and sip an adult beverage Take a hot bath in this Godforsaken hotel room I’m stuck in.

23. Pets? dogs and bunnies Spectre the Labradog, our two mixed-breed blue-point Siamese cats, Tzu II the Beta, and for one year, my dear friend Amy’s seal-point Siamese cats.
24. Any new and exciting news you’d like to share? new yes…exciting no My cousin Sara got married on Friday!!!! She was a beautiful bride!!!
25. What did you want to be when you were little? someone who made a difference for others What every other little girl wants to be: a veterinarian and a photographer. HA!
26. Where do you want to be in 10 years? (This wasn’t a question…but 26 was not on Cris’ list…so I made it up.) I really want to be teaching riding lessons and influencing young women’s lives somehow. Hopefully, we’ll still have Spectre, John will be a successful country lawyer and I will have long hair, a couple of lovely cats, my horses, a Collie, and a lush garden.
27. What is your favorite flower? daisys Peonies.
28. What are you listening to right now? Brooks and Dunn…”aint nuth about you” The News on this local Vermont TV channel….
30. What is a day on the calendar you are looking forward to? Monday Friday, because I know the weekend’s comin’.
29. What was the last thing you ate? hmmm cant member pasta with shrimp from Holdiay Inn room service. And, yes, I do, in fact, realize that 29 and 30 are reversed in this post.
